Parents
Welcome to the CYO Parent Resource Center!
Parents and families play an essential role in creating a positive, respectful, and faith-centered athletic experience for our student-athletes. CYO sports are designed to foster growth, sportsmanship, teamwork, and character development, and strong communication between families, parishes, and officials is critical to that mission.
To help ensure that questions, concerns, and situations are handled fairly and efficiently, CYO follows a clearly defined communication structure. Most game-related matters are addressed at the parish and game-site level, which allows issues to be reviewed by those directly involved and responsible for the event.
The guidelines below are intended to provide clarity on when and how parents should communicate with the CYO Office.
When Not to Contact the CYO Office Directly
Parents should not contact the CYO Office to report:
- Game incidents or disputes
- Opposing teams
- Referee decisions or calls
- General game-related matters
These matters are not handled at the Office level, unless they are submitted through official reporting channels as defined below.
Parents should communicate any questions, concerns, or issues to their coach. The coach will then elevate the matter to the Parish Athletic Director (AD) or Parish Athletic Representative (PAR), who may contact the CYO Office on the parent’s behalf when appropriate.
Parents should not directly approach or raise concerns with referees. Communication with game officials is the responsibility of the coach.
Parent emails sent to the CYO Office regarding game-related matters will be redirected to parish leadership for handling at the appropriate level, except in situations that warrant direct Office communication.
When You May Contact the CYO Office Directly
Parents should contact the CYO Office only in the following situations:
- Requests for Office Placement
- Concerns or complaints involving their own parish/program administration
- This should occur only after communication with the Parish Pastor has already been attempted.
What the CYO Office Can Act On
If an issue occurs at a game, including but not limited to athlete interactions, conduct concerns, disputes, or incidents, the CYO Office can only review or take action when the issue is documented through an official report.
Actionable reports include:
- Referee Report
- Parish Report (submitted by the Sport AD or PAR only, not a coach)
- Site Administrator Report (where applicable)
Without official documentation as listed above, the CYO Office has no authority or basis to review, investigate, or intervene.
